The Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI) is a not for profit research and training institute on international trade under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce containing Public and Private sector representatives in its board. The main mandates of BFTI are providing policy support to the Government of Bangladesh and the private sector trade bodies and associations on WTO and issues; building trade-related capacity for the Government agencies and private sector enterprises through training, educational program, research, business development facilitation etc.; and providing a policy forum for consultation between policymakers and business leaders. BFTI also emphasizes on branding of the Nation and its potential sectors for exponential export growth. Bangladesh’s inexorable rise towards middle-income country status has been a direct result of its successes in many areas of international trade. By forecasting the risks and benefits of a policy, the BFTI can play a significant role in Bangladesh’s future Trade Policy. Since the organization is closely affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce, it has been given the responsibility to execute the ‘Made in Bangladesh’ campaign globally.

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) is responsible for formulating the policy framework to support sustaining (sustainable) business environment and enhance foreign trade of the country. All matters relating to the World Trade Organization (WTO) are also managed by the Ministry of Commerce. The activities of the Ministry are geared towards creating an enabling environment for a dynamic and vibrant economy in Bangladesh. In a rapidly changing global trading system, the work of the Ministry is agile to react to the different needs of the growing private sector. It is recognized that trade is now the engine of growth and a conduit for job creation and poverty reduction, one of the main objectives of the Government of Bangladesh. So, the Ministry is focused in ensuring product development and diversification. It is also involved in market management, monitoring of daily necessities and protection of the rights of the consumer in addition to the formulation and implementation of import and export policy to ensure prudent growth of the export-led industries.
